Chicago Historical Society Broadens Reach of Encyclopedia’s Digital Media Assets Using Scene7’s Dynamic Imaging

Enhances Learning with Scene7 dynamic zoom and pan

Novato, CA — August 10, 2005 — Scene7®, the market leader in automated rich media solutions for the web, email and print, today announced that The Chicago Historical Society has implemented Scene7’s Dynamic Imaging Solution for its online Encyclopedia of Chicago, offering users enhanced views of historic image sources in greater detail, and in context.

The Encyclopedia of Chicago is a combined print and online resource that has been developed over the past 15 years in collaboration with The Newberry Library, Northwestern University, and the Chicago Historical Society. The encyclopedia was developed to provide historians, teachers, and the public with access to text entries and interpretive essays, historic documents, newspaper articles, images, static and interactive maps, timelines, and video clips. The online encyclopedia consists of over 1400 entries and 1200 historical digital media sources which enable the encyclopedia’s over 3,000 daily users to see new ways of understanding Chicago history .

“We wanted to allow our visitors to get the most out of these historic documents and images – with Scene7 users can zoom in to see details not even visible looking at the original sources,” said Sarah Marcus, Ph.D., Project Director for the Electronic Encyclopedia at the Chicago Historical Society. “Our users love it, and we have had scholars tell us that they have been able to see details and nuances that they have never seen before. Scene7’s zoom has enabled a new way to look at familiar sources, which offers educators a new approach to presenting curriculum.”

Scene7’s Dynamic Imaging solution is helping The Chicago Historical Society to expand the reach of historic sources far beyond traditional print and other educational resources. The Electronic Encyclopedia is accessible to visitors worldwide, allowing users to interact with historic documents and images from any web browser.

The Chicago Historical Society turned to its partners at Northwestern University to develop the Electronic Encyclopedia’s UI and to develop Flash-based navigational and viewer tools that allow online users to interact with the content. Adding new content to the encyclopedia is simple and straightforward. Project workers simply upload images into their system and Scene7’s dynamic zoom capabilities are automatically applied.

“Scene7 gives us great advantages as content producers,” continued Marcus. “Scene7 allows us to offer our users more interesting content. Large maps, for example, are not viable online unless you can zoom in to see the fine details. Now users can view maps of their own neighborhoods and see how they have changed over the years. We could not offer this experience without Scene7.”

"We’re proud to be associated with this unique educational resource," said Doug Mack, CEO of Scene7. "The Internet offers an interactive, learning environment that enhances traditional teaching methods. The Chicago Historical Society has created an engaging, informative user experience that brings the rich history of Chicago to life.”
